The biggest solar explosion since 2006 was report on Tuesday, the M-2 (or medium size) explosion was registered at 05:41GMT following a period of initial flare. Images of this event were luckily caught by NASA SDO satellite which launched last year to provide High Definition images of such events. Following the explosion the mushroom sized cloud soon fell back and supposedly covered 50% of the surface.
According to the Space Weather Prediction Center, the situation is being monitored and the flare is “expected to cause G1 (minor) to G2 (moderate) levels of geomagnetic storm activity tomorrow, June 8, beginning around 1800 GMT.”
The geomagnetic storm should pass over a period of 12-24 hours and could effect power grids, GPS Satellites and other devices which could also lead to the rerouting of flights that operate in polar regions.
The rerouting of flights is only done as a precautionary measure in order to maintain communication signals which could be effected by storm. For those on the ground though it will mean the aurora borealis and aurora australis in the late hours of June 8th and 9th.
This size of activity could be a big indicator that we are seeing an end to the solar minimum and the sun is returning to regular activity.
